Ervin Akins Obituary

 

 

                MT. VERNON- Ervin Loraine Akins, 90, formerly of Wisconsin and Colorado, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018 at The Laurels of Mt. Vernon.

                He was born March 26, 1928 in Warsaw to the late Mark W. and Lulu Irene (Tish) Akins. He was a 1946 graduate of Millersburg High School, and a veteran of the Army Air Corp serving in the occupation of Japan from 1946-1949. He was a 1962 graduate of the Ohio State University with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He owned a large animal veterinary practice in Delavan, WI, retiring from the profession in 1994.

                In his retirement he enjoyed RV’ing, doing so from 1995-2008. He was very interested in WWII history.  He enjoyed hunting and target shooting. For many years he attended local motorsports events, and and he enjoyed remodeling a classic 1956 Chevy with his son.

                He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Iris (Gardner) Akins of Mt. Vernon, whom he married March 8, 1953; his daughter, Susanne (Larry) Schalles of Justin, TX; a granddaughter, Nicole (Nick Post) Akins of Zumbrota, MN; four great-grandchildren, Levi, Willow, Mika, and Porsche of Zumbrota, MN; six sisters, Erma Doty of Ashland, Wynona Rosenberger of Tennessee, Unita Rogers of Coshocton, Janice (Jeff) Thomas of Coshocton, Bonnie Hinkle of Walhonding, and Connie (Dave) Durben of Millersport; a brother-in-law, Richard (Milly) Gardner of Highland, CA; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

                In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David Akins; three brothers, Kenneth, Gary, & Dale Akins; and a sister, Betty Taylor.

                Calling hours will be held at the Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Brinkhaven Cemetery, with Pastor David Fowls officiating, and military rites performed by the Knox Co. Joint Veterans Council Honor Guard. www.fischerfuneralhome.com
