Danville - Alvey Harold Payne, 83, passed away on January 12, 2015 at The Laurels of Mount Vernon surrounded by his family.
He was born on September 22, 1931, in Tiverton Township to the late Dwight and Violet (Logston) Payne. On July 26, 1952, he was married to Iva Mae (Turney) Payne in Augusta, Georgia.
After graduating from Danville High School in 1950, Harold served his country in the Korean War with the U.S. Army from 1952-54. Upon discharge, he went to work cutting timber. He was employed by Cooper Bessemer in Mount Vernon, and retired after 26 years from Mansfield Plumbing Products. He enjoyed working in his garden and loved raising tomatoes.
Harold was a lover of sports, high school, college and professional. He enjoyed hunting and playing golf. He was a dedicated, loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his close friend and companion Martha Mann. He was a member of the Danville United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his children; Timothy (Mary) Payne of Howard, Richard (Julia) Payne of Glenmont, Cheryl (Mike) Colopy of Danville, Laura (Philip) Mickley of Wooster, grandchildren; Brian (Sarah) Payne, Kristin (Brandon) Samples, Rebecca (Michael) Dussel, Stephen (Michelle) Payne, Matthew Payne, Ryan (Olivia) Colopy , Bradley Colopy, Taylor, Maegan, and Joshua Mickley, 6 great grandchildren, brothers; Lawrence Payne and Burt Craig (Susan) Payne of Danville, sisters; Mariam Lyons, Evelyn Frazier, Patricia (Lynn) Lyons of Danville, many nieces and nephews, and a brother-in-law, Glen W. (Gretchen) Turney of Florida.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Nedra Wears and Rose Payne, brother-in-laws, Delroyce Frazier and Lyle Lyons, a sister-in-law, Doris Payne, and a nephew Russell Smith.
Calling hours will be from 6-8 pm Thursday, January 15 at the Danville United Methodist Church, where the funeral will be held at 11:00 am on Friday. Rev. Tom Orr will officiate. Burial, with military honors from the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Workman Cemetery.
