Giles “Tom” Dunn, 84, of Mount Vernon Ohio, passed away on July 15, 2025 surrounded by his wife, Peggy, and the loving aides at Danbury Memory Care, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Tom was born on September 22, 1941 in Du Quoin, Illinois to Nina and Harry Dunn. He grew up in Pinckneyville, Illinois and attended Pinckneyville H.S. After honorably serving in Vietnam as a Cryptographer for the Army and the NSA, he was discharged on November 22, 1966. He attended Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and graduated in 1972 with a degree in Special Education and a Minor in Theatre. After graduating and moving to New Jersey, Tom taught GED classes at Rahway State Prison and ran the work release program. He then transferred to the Attorney General’s Office where he was a member of the State Law Enforcement and Planning Program until he joined the RICO staff where he was in charge of all confiscated property until he retired. After retiring and moving to a farm outside Danville, Ohio, Tom was finally able to fully engage in his real loves: golf, fishing, and hunting. He found true bliss mowing greens at Apple Valley Golf Course and playing in various leagues with Dick Wells, Charley Fox, and the 2 Docs. To top off his golfing adventures he hit a hole in one at Pinehurst on his 70th birthday. There were also his beloved dogs and many cats, which were his main topic of conversation to anyone who was willing to listen!
Tom is survived by his wife of 54 years, Peggy, his daughter, Laura Hindman of Texas, his four grandchildren: Lacey, Lanie, Laken and Mason, as well as many Oberhauser cousins (especially Paul) who adopted Tom as their own. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Jim Dunn, and treasured cousin, Alice Burns.
At Tom’s request, there will be no services but he wouldn’t say no to a donation to a cat or dog shelter.
The family would like to thank Tom’s devoted caregivers at home: Cassie Burson, Vicki Durbin, and Barb Blubaugh, as well as the staff of Gentiva Hospice and the amazing and competent staff at Danbury Senior Living’s Memory Care Center.
