Gwynn "Bill" Griffis

       COSHOCTON- Gwynn William "Bill" Griffis, also known as Sarge, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on July 6, 2026, at the age of 94.

       Born on December 27, 1931, in Columbus, Ohio, Bill lived a life full of adventure, service, and love, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him. Bill was the devoted son of Henry and Ethyl (nee Thompson) Griffis, who predeceased him. He grew up with a strong sense of duty and patriotism, which led him to join the U.S. Marines in July 1948. Bill demonstrated extraordinary bravery and resilience, surviving the brutal Battle of Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War. His courage was recognized with the award of the Purple Heart.

       Following his service in the Marines, Bill continued his military career with the U.S. Air Force, serving as an Air Police Supervisor and law enforcement officer on base. His service took him to Spain, where he spent nine years, and he proudly served for four years in the Air Force.

       After his honorable discharge, Bill's adventurous spirit led him to a unique career in the film industry in Spain. He began as an interpreter and coordinator for movie studios, eventually moving into the creative realm of building props and special effects. His craftsmanship was showcased in the film "The Fall of The Roman Empire" in 1964, where he constructed a chariot that graced the screen.

       Bill was a man of many passions. He enjoyed the great outdoors, spending countless hours fishing, hunting, and firearms. A voracious reader and a lover of old films, Bill found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was known for his direct approach and sharp wit, qualities that endeared him to friends and family alike. His generosity knew no bounds, as he was always willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed.

       Bill's personal life was as fulfilling as his career. He found his soulmate in Marilyn Anne Griffis, whom he lovingly referred to as his sweetheart throughout their 30 years of marriage. Together, they built a beautiful life, filled with love and laughter. Bill is survived by Marilyn, his devoted wife, his son James R. Bailey, daughter-in-law Lisa J. Bailey, son Juan William, and sister Seanne Oliver. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. These family bonds were the center of Bill's world, and his memory will be treasured by each of them.

       While Bill's departure leaves a void that cannot be filled, his spirit lives on in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him. His life was a testament to courage, creativity, and kindness.
