Mount Vernon - Harley C. Rhodes, 86, died Wednesday October 15th at his residence.
He was born January 27, 1922 at Wolf Creek, OH to the late Martha (Robinson) and Franz Opeka Rhodes, Vienna Austria.
He was a graduate of St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minnesota. After serving as an Officer and pilot in the U.S. Air Force during World War II he returned to Ohio and worked at Goodyear, Akron, OH in research and development.
Later he returned to Mt. Vernon and was hired as a company pilot for Shelmar Corp. He worked many years for Sears & Roebuck in which he was awarded the National Award of Excellence for work performed. He was also a fine carpenter and helped build a number of homes in the Mt. Vernon area.
He loved working with wood and created many fine pieces that he gave to family and friends over the years.
He is survived by two daughters, Cheryl L. Rhodes of Mt. Vernon, Cynthia Ann Rhodes, Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Sheila Puglisi of Ashland, OH and Carole Vess of Loudonville, OH.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Rhodes; and a brother Harold Eugene Rhodes.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Fischer Funeral Home in Danville, where friends and family may call one hour prior to service for visitation. The Rev. Lloyd Miller will officiate. Burial will follow at the Workman Cemetery, Danville, with Military Honors conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans council. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Knox County, 17700 Coshocton Rd., Mount Vernon, 43050.
