COSHOCTON- Harold William "Bill" Smith, 89, of 46693 TR 74, died Sunday, April 24, 2011 at the Coshocton Co. Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 9, 1921 in Tiverton to the late Lewis Earl and Edith Eliza (Petry) Smith. He married Elizabeth R. "Betty" (Pearce) Smith on Feb. 15, 1947, who preceded him in death on March 19, 2006. He was a 1939 graduate of Warsaw High School, where he was a star third baseman for the Pirates, and he served in the US Coast Guard during WWII (1942-1945) as a Petty Officer, 2nd Class. He was a press operator at the former Shaw-Barton Company. He was a member of the American Legion #634, the Tiverton Farmers Institute, and formerly a member of Moose Lodge #935. He enjoyed raising chickens and going out dancing with his wife "Bet". He also enjoyed tending his garden and going camping with family.
He is survived by two daughters; Connie Smith and Edith (Robert) Harris of Coshocton, nine grandchildren; Jamie (Michelle) Finnell of Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, Wendy (Mike) Moats, Cindy (Rick) D'Ostroph, Louie (Stephanie) Smith, Billie Jo (Anthony) West, and Charlie, Lena, Randy, & Kilee Jo Harris, all of Coshocton, twelve great-grandchildren, a daughter-in-law, Melissa Smith of Coshocton, two step-granddaughters; April (Christopher) Mealick of Buckeye Lake and Brooke Donaker of Coshocton, several nieces and nephews, and he will be greatly missed by many special friends and neighbors.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Harold "Louie" Smith, two brothers; Bob & Pete Smith, a sister, Vera Stewart, and his special dog, "Duchess".
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at the Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw with Rev. Everett Stoddard officiating. Calling hours are from 5-7 p.m. prior to the service on Wednesday. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 30th in Tiverton Cemetery, with Rev. Everett Stoddard officiating, and graveside military rites conducted by the Coshocton County Joint Veterans Council.
