John Hammond

Danville – John Hammond, 77, passed away at the Knox Community Hospital on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

John was born in Mount Vernon on December 20, 1946 to Dale and Wava (Workman) Hammond. He was a 1966 graduate of Danville High School, and a Vietnam Veteran of the U.S. Army. John’s family owned and operated the former Hammond's Supermarket and he was the Assistant Manager of Dale’s Cardinal that was owned and operated along with his siblings starting in 1983. He also served with the Danville Fire Department for over 40 years, and was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Ann (Harding) Hammond; daughters, Leslie (Matthew Kochenspager) Hammond, Christy Bennett, and Amber (Matt) Annett; grandchildren, Trenten and Trever Sturgeon, Sydney Bennett, and Connor McCammon; brothers, Scott (Aimee) Hammond, and Mike (Jean) Hammond; several nieces and nephews, including a very special nephew, Burk Hammond; and his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Kathy Mabe (Joe Tharp), and Lori (Jon) Moore, Joseph (Carol) Harding, and Stephen (Connie) Harding.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda (Lanny) Parrish and Catherine "Kay" (Larry) Stimpert; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carroll and Betty Harding.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 16, at the Fischer Funeral Home in Danville, with Pastor Ken Springer officiating. Burial will follow in Workman Cemetery, with graveside military rites performed by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council Honor Guard. Calling hours will be held from 1-4 Sunday afternoon, which will conclude with a Masonic service.
