Danville - M. Eugene "Boomer" Smith, 82, died Tuesday April 26, 2011 at the Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
He was born September 6, 1928 in Belmont, WV to Mary Sue (Cantner) and Charles A. Smith. He married his loving wife of 61 years, Naomi C. (Speckman), on April 16, 1950. He retired in 1993 from Cooper Energy Services after 45 years.
He was a muzzleloader/gun collector and builder and a longtime NRA member. He was president of the Danville Athletic Boosters for several years, and as a former football and baseball player and enthusiast, he loved watching his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren play.
He is survived by his wife; Naomi of Danville, a son; Gregory L. Smith (Nancy) of Danville, a daughter; Connie J. Thomas (Steve) of Howard, grandsons; Jeremy L. Stake, and Brian E. Smith (Cassie) both of Danville, Travis Thomas (Brandy) of Mt. Vernon, and Zach Thomas (Mindy) of Howard, a granddaughter; Stacy Shultz (Jim) of Danville, great grandsons; Cayden and Brandyn, great granddaughters; Brianna, Tess, and Sophie, nieces; Sherrie Holmes (Jim), and Jane Addair (Mike) of Danville, and a nephew; John Loyd (Mary) of Danville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister; Kathryn Loyd, and a nephew; David Loyd.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the Fischer Funeral Home in Danville. Stan Ratliff will officiate. Burial will follow in Workman Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 5-8 on Friday.
