M. Rowena Workman
Mount Vernon - Mary Rowena Workman, 90, died Wednesday June 11, 2008 at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
She was a former life-long resident, living 60 years in the same farm home, of Jefferson Township, Knox County, in the Danville and Greer area. She was born June 8, 1918 in Knox County to the late Charles S. and Lola M. (Scholes) Awwiller. In 1940, she married her husband, Robert L. Workman, who preceded her in death in 1984. Two brothers, Clarence and Beryl, also preceded her in death. She was a member of the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and its Ladies Auxiliary. She was a charter member of the Danville Garden Club, and a 63 year member of The Ohio Association of Garden Clubs with whom she was an accredited OAGC Flower Show judge for 38 years, and served in the county and regional offices, including OAGC Junior Garden Club Chairperson for 4 years.
She also loved to play cards and to needlework crafts. After moving to Mt. Vernon, she was a Red Cross volunteer at the Knox Community Hospital, volunteered at the Mt. Vernon Library, was a member of the Red Hat Society, was a 4-H leader for 8 years, and belonged to the Tan & Toil Garden Club.
She is survived by a son; Barry L. Workman, PhD, and wife Sarah-Jane of Columbus, a granddaughter; Mollie-Marie of Columbus, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, husband, and brothers, she was preceded in death by sisters-in-law; Estella Awwiller, and Dorothy Awwiller.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the Wesley Chapel Cemetery on Chapel Rd. near Danville. Pastor Lloyd Miller will officiate. Memorial donations can be made to the Wesley Chapel Church; 18975 Chapel Rd., Danville, 43014.
