Mariam R. Crow

DANVILLE- Mariam Ruth Crow, 93, passed away on October 18, 2015 after a short illness. She was born in Sherman (Barberton), Ohio on October 14, 1922 to Leo Ernest and Lucy Pearl (Young) Eberhardt. She attended Akron City Schools and Norton High School, graduating in 1940. She was married to John E. “Jack” Crow on January 21, 1941. Both Jack and Mariam attended night school and university classes after graduating.

Moving to Danville in 1945, they purchased the Danville Hardware Storefrom Mariam’s father Leo, in partnership with two of her brothers. In 1957, Jack and Mariam sold their interest in the Hardware, and started Crow Plumbing and Electric. She worked as secretary and office manager in thissuccessful Danville area family business for 40 years as they worked in the community and raised their 5 children.

Mariam served for 23 years as a den leader in the Cub Scout program. She continuously served in various other capacities in the scouting program, and was presented a Training of Trainers Award. For her valiant service to boys through scouting, Mariam was presented the highest volunteer scouting award in 1973 by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Muskingum Valley Council - The Silver Fawn, akin to the Silver Beaver. All three of Mariam’s sons and one grandson are Eagle Scouts. Mariam and her husband Jack were a scouting dynamo - Jack was also presented the highest volunteer award in scouting.

In addition to her BSA service, she was a Girl Scout leader for 30 years in the Daisies, Brownies, and Junior Leader programs. Both of Mariam’s daughters achieved the highest Girl Scout ranks.

She was the Danville Band Booster president for two separate terms. She led a fundraiser to purchase new band uniforms for the entire band in one year. Mariam also was president of the Danville PTA.

Mariam was a Worthy Matron for the Kokosing Lodge of the Eastern Stars, and served as President of the United Methodist Women. She was president of the Danville Garden Club for 10 years where she led a fundraising drive to put Christmas lights in the town streets.

Mariam is a 25 year member of the Danville Lions Club, and was presented the Lion of the Year award.

Recently, Mariam has served the community in the Interchurch Program, working in the facility helping others every Fridayfor over 17 years. She retired from these volunteer duties only a few weeks ago.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, three brothers – Lee Eugene, Robert, and David, two sisters – Harriett Volkmor and June Myers, and foster brother Benny Bennett.

She is survived by children Carol (Roger) Krueger RN of Gulf Shores AL, Robert (Teri)Crow of Belton MO, Patrick (Sandy) Crow Sr. of Danville, Ruth (Dan) Chambers of Houston Texas, and Dr. John (Jodi) Crow of Cuyahoga Falls OH, 22 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Calling hours will be from 1:00-3:00 & 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21st at the Fischer Funeral Home in Danville. The funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22nd at the Danville United Methodist Church, where friends may also call one hour before the services. Rev. Robert Alexander will officiate. Interment at Workman Cemetery will immediately follow the services at the church. www.fischerfuneralhome.com

Mariam’s incredible contribution to the Danville community will long be remembered in the hearts of those she served for generations to come. Indeed, Danville is a better place because of her enduring efforts of leadership and service. But Mariam’s greatest lifetime love, concern, and contribution was to her family.
