DANVILLE - Martin E. Thorp, 88, of 207 S. Mickley Street died July 16, 2008 at his residence.

He was born May 2, 1920 in Utica to the late Ernest and Waneta (Alspach) Thorp. He was retired from Buckeye Steel and Plumbing. He was a member of the St. Luke Catholic Church, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, 35th Division, where he served in the Battle of the Bulge, and received a Bronze Star. He was a member of the VFW and the Danville American Legion #650. He was a former member of the Danville Fire Dept. and Emergency Squad.

He is survived by his wife, Helen (Mickley) Thorp, whom he married Jan. 9, 1943. Also surviving is a daughter, Janet (Lonnie) Moreland of Danville. A son, Bruce Thorp of Danville. A son-in-law, Larry Fisher of Loudonville. 12 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. A sister, Barbara Durbin of Lexington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son & daughter-in-law, Gregg & Diane Thorp, daughter, Karen Fisher, brother, Don Thorp, brother-in-law, Walter Durbin, and father & mother-in-law, Bernard & Marilla Mickley.

Funeral mass will be held Monday, July 21, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Luke Catholic Church in Danville with Rev. F. Richard Snoke officiating. Burial will be in the St. Luke Cemetery with graveside military services conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. Visitation is Sunday, July 20, 2008 from 5-8 P.M at the Fischer Funeral Home in Danville where there will be a prayer service at 7:45 P.M.
