Danville – Robert J. Rettig, beloved father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on September 23, 2014 at the Laurels in Mount Vernon.

He was born December 22, 1922 in Galion to Carl and Elsie (Tucker) Rettig. He served in the U.S. Army with the 143rd Field Artillery Battalion from 1944-46 during WWII. He was married to Marie Hosey on April 9, 1950.

Prior to moving to Danville, he was a journeyman craftsman in Galion. He retired from Cooper Energy in Mount Vernon, but he also used his skills working with Bob Durbin Plumbing and Heating, both before and after retirement, and was always ready to lend a hand to a person in need.

Robert was an avid sportsman and motorcycle enthusiast. He was a charter member of the Sunset Ramblers in Galion. He also belonged to the Danville American Legion Post #650, the Moose Lodge in Mount Vernon, I.A.M. Local 90, and the St. Marks Methodist Church in Galion. His greatest joy though came from spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving are his four children; Richard (Jackie) Rettig of Marysville, WA, Sandra (Dean) Stearns of Carterville, IL, Randy (Phylis) Rettig of Mount Vernon, and Melinda (Phil) Bohrmann of Galion, 9 grandchildren; Angie (Kirk) Dunham of Seattle, WA, Christie (Robert) Olson of Kirkland, WA, Kyle Stearns of Marion, IL, Samuel Stearns of Carterville, IL, Kelly (Brett) Hankins of Jacksonville, NC, Andrew Rettig and Samantha Rettig both of Mount Vernon, Zachary (Carlye) Bohrmann of Roseville, MI, and Dalton Boahrmann of Galion, 8 great grandchildren; Sebastian Dunham, Isaac and Eric Olson, Andrew Rettig Jr., Dashiell DeJulius, and Brooklyn, Colton, and Wyatt Bohrmann. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, at the Fischer Funeral Home, 403 High St. Danville. Pastor Ron Davis will officiate. Burial will be at 3:00 at Fairview Cemetery in Galion. Graveside Military honors will be performed by the Galion-Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail and the Fort Knox Funeral Honors Program. Calling hours are 2 hours prior to the service. The family would like to thank the Laurels, Hospice of Knox County, caring neighbor Jack Blue, and the Village of Danville.
