Evelyn Childress Obituary

COSHOCTON- Evelyn Eileen (Selders) Childress, 83, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 6, 2023 surrounded by family.

She was born Sept. 4, 1939 in Millersburg to the late George and Mabel (Fraser) Selders. She was a 1957 graduate of Killbuck High School.

Evelyn married James Roy Childress, Jr. on July 28, 1957, who preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 2021. They were more than husband and wife, they were partners, they were a team. Together they were very active in their community and donated countless hours working for causes they believed in.

Jim was an auctioneer, Evelyn helped with the paperwork. She had worked as a tax preparer for H&R Block for a time and continued to file out of the home for many years after. With their skill sets, they spent many years at the Coshocton County Fair Junior Auction working with Coshocton County youth. They also helped put on the horse show and promoted the fair year after year. They were very strong members of the Grange, with Keene Hill Grange their home Grange. They held County offices and promoted Grange across the county and state.

Evelyn and Jim were very active Farm Bureau members. They helped set up the local safety meetings. Jim loved old tractors, and they were some of the original members of the Coshocton County Antique Power Association. At one time they had a nice collection of old tractors. Evelyn was a cancer survivor. Jim painted a tractor pink in honor and to support cancer survivors. This tractor is still in the area.

Evelyn and Jim had a hog roasting business, “Childress Roasting & Catering”. They also did beef and they were one of the first to do sweet corn. You never knew where you would see them, but you always knew that the food would be good. Jim would start his hog at home and roast it on his way to their destination. They were stopped several times because "their trailer was on fire".

She enjoyed crocheting, reading, and doing word search puzzles. She like to watch “Days of Our Lives”. She was a member of the former Warsaw Lioness Club, and loved tending to her flower gardens up until the time she was unable.

We all know people like Evelyn. They are the flowers of life that rise above the weeds that want to choke us to death. They bring beauty and make the world better. But their time is short. We appreciate them, but it's only the realization when they are gone that we come to the hard reality of what we have lost. It is up to us to be the next generation of "Flowers" and make the world better and when the Master gathers His flowers for the Eternal bouquet we can all be together in Glory. People like Evelyn and Jim showed us how.

Evelyn is survived by four sons, Mark (Janet) Childress of Coshocton, Dale (Tracy) Childress of Warsaw, Bruce (Lori) Childress of Bakersville, and Barry (Shelly) Childress of Coshocton; a daughter, Amy Mohler of Frazeysburg; grandchildren, Johnathon Childress, Jessica (Jason) Beckett, Joni (David) Yoder, Christopher Childress, Mindy Augustin, Jared (Courtney) Hamilton, Beau (Heather) Childress, Adrianna (Michael) Ondayko, Michael (Sarah) Ross, Tacey (Johnathon) Firewick; twenty great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces, & nephews; and her cat, “Dolly”.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed & John Robert Selders; a sister, Eva Rinehart; and a son-in-law, Travis Mohler.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw, with Pastor Dave Kraft officiating. Burial will follow in Blissfield Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. www.fischerfuneralhome.com
